No one wants a boring panel discussion, yet it happens all the time. Why? Because a panel discussion is an inherently lazy format. The organizer picks a moderator, invites a few panelists, and hopes for the best. But hope is not a strategy.
With a bit of intentionality, you can take a panel from ho-hum to the highlight of the conference! Whether you’re the panel organizer, moderator, or panelist, you have the power to create an experience where the audience leans in—engaged, entertained, and excited to be in the room.
5 Strategies to Avoid a Boring Panel Discussion
1. Get Clear on the Vision. Before you do anything, talk with the meeting organizer about what they really want from the panel. Ask probing questions like:
- What do you want the audience to walk away with?
- Do you want to educate, inspire, entertain, or stir up a debate?
- Should the panel be formal or casual?
- Should the discussion be polite or a bit confrontational?
- How interactive should it be?
- Should the audience participate or just listen?
The more you define the experience, the better you can craft a dynamic, engaging session.
2. Shake Up the Format. Panels get dull when they follow the same tired formula: moderator asks a question, panelist answers, repeat. Instead, structure the panel in 6-10 minute chunks of time and shake things up at each transition.
Some fresh panel formats include:
- The Hot Seat: Audience members pose real-time challenges, and panelists give instant feedback (think Shark Tank).
- Café-Style Chat: Panelists talk as if sitting in a coffee shop, instead of making formal remarks.
- Game Show Style: Use lightning rounds, audience polling, or even a Family Feud-style showdown.
- Point/Counterpoint: A lively debate format where panelists take opposite sides of an issue.
- Live Demos: Instead of just talking, show something in action—whether it’s a product, strategy, or case study.

3. Create a Conversational Drumbeat. From the moment you start working with your panelists, emphasize that this is a conversation among smart people, not a Q&A ping-pong match where the moderator asks all the questions. Encourage them to:
- Listen to each other and respond naturally
- Jump in when they have something valuable to add
- Keep answers short and punchy—save the long backstories for the networking reception!
As the panel moderator, you set the tone from the start by asking provocative, open-ended questions and engaging in a bit of banter. Consider “warming them up” beforehand with a pre-panel chat!
4. Keep the Audience Engaged. The audience should be part of the conversation—not just passive observers. Here are some easy, quick ways to involve them:
- Polls & Live Q&A: Use event apps to collect real-time feedback.
- Show of Hands: A quick “Raise your hand if…” question instantly creates a connection.
- Audience Hot Seat: Bring an audience member onstage to ask a question or share a quick experience.
- Lightning Round: Have panelists give a one-sentence answer to a fun or unexpected question.
People will remember how they felt during your panel, not just what was said. Make it fun, interactive, and worth their time!
5. End with a Bang. Don’t let the panel fizzle out with a weak “Any final thoughts?” Instead, finish strong:
- Rapid-fire takeaways: Each panelist shares one final piece of advice in 15 seconds.
- Bold Predictions: Ask, “What’s one thing in this industry that will be completely different a year from now?”
- Call to Action: Give the audience something to DO, whether it’s reading a book, trying a strategy, or connecting with a panelist.
- Surprise Moment: Reveal a fun fact, unexpected story, or even a giveaway to leave the audience buzzing.
- Wrap it Up with a Rap Song: Have an expert perform a rap with a detailed summary of the key points in the session.
A panel discussion should never be a snooze-fest. With the right prep, creative format, and audience engagement, you can turn a boring panel into an unforgettable experience.
